Rome’s transition from Republic to Empire.
Essential Questions - What is the significance of Julius Caesar and Augustus Caesar? What made Caesar different from men like Sulla, Crassus and Pompeii before him? Was Caesar a dictator or a reformer? Was it Julius or Augustus who truly began the change from Republic to Empire?
Big Ideas - The senate becoming weaker while the generals grow in power. Power of military and civic offices expanded during war and strife. Evolution of Roman generals from an office of civic duty to a ladder for personal growth and power. Reforms and Absolute power.
Assessments -
Quiz identifying key individuals and their roles during both men's lives. Some key terms include, Brutus, Cicero, Crassus, Sulla, Pompeii, Mark Anthony, and others.
Group discussion - Discussing and debating in small groups on whether or not the Republic could have stood if Caesar had been defeated by Pompeii during the civil war or if Pompeii would have simply followed Caesar's path.
2-3 page essay utilizing both primary and secondary sources. Sources include Suetonius's book The Twelve Caesars along with other excerpts from Roman history that include Caesar's rise to power and his assassination.
